What is the Open Era of Survivor?

Host Jeff Probst explained the Open Era of Survivor at the finale of Survivor 50.

“The Open Era is taking … the idea that anything that has ever happened, at any time on the show, can happen in any season – at any time, in any order, without any warning,” Probst said.

If you’re keeping score, Survivor seasons 41-49 are considered the show’s new era, with Survivor 50 a bit of a mashup, with old-school players competing alongside new-era players, in an unpredictable, or open, game environment.
