What happened on Survivor Season 51 Episode 3?

Directly following the raucous Tribal Council from Episode 2, the Savu tribe has A LOT to discuss. Eric Macksoud is feeling really good about his spot, especially for narrowly escaping eviction. Though they voted differently, Sharonda Cox and Ori Jean-Charles confirm they’re still bonded. Carter Krull, worried that being on the wrong side of the vote puts him in a dangerous position, is processing everything that went down. Honestly, the entire tribe is reeling. But none more than Rob, who elects to sleep on the chilly beach all night. Alone.

Rob Antonson must atone for not using his idol on Eric like he said he would, and wouldn’t you know it: Eric is the one who finds him solo on the beach the next morning. But something new is up with Rob: His foot hurts. He injured it days ago and has just “toughed it out” until now (allegedly).  He’s worried that it could be something truly terrible; something that could get infected and hinder his ability to not only stay in the game, but also take care of his family. He returns to his tribemates and tells them about the pain he’s feeling, likely counting on empathy, but his injury is met with skepticism. The timing of this supposed injury seems a little too convenient following a Tribal Council that clearly did not go Rob’s way. No one puts it better than Ori: “My mom named me Ori, not stupid.”

Post-Tribal Council Stress Disorder

The next morning, Rob tells producers he wants to see the medic. The doctor shows up with a friend: host Jeff Probst. Before the doc takes a look, Jeff takes Rob for a one-on-one chat to get a better understanding of what’s going on. Rob’s plan to put his own name down failed, and he doesn’t want to simply throw in the towel, and squander this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (unless you’re the likes of ”Boston Rob” Mariano or Cirie Fields). He tells Jeff he’d like the doc to take a look, and make sure he’s not putting his health in real danger by playing through the pain.

Doc checks out Rob’s foot, and lets him know that he has suffered a cut, but is otherwise fine, and won’t be pulled from the game. Rob then asks about the chance of infection, which is clearly worrisome for him. Doc admits that there’s always a possibility of infection, and that’s all that Rob needs to hear.

Jeff, Doc and Rob (sore foot and all) walk back to the rest of the Savu Tribe to tell them the news. Jeff clarifies that Rob is not being pulled from the game, but that he has decided to go home.

It’s day six.

All of this is going down while Kristin suffers what she believes is a broken foot. She avoids the doc completely, however, avoiding putting herself in a position where she might be sent home.

But wait – didn’t Rob have something special in his back pocket that he’d promised to use on Eric mere hours ago? Oh, yes, the idol! Carter – who is desperately trying to pull his game together now that Rob has exited – now holds Rob’s idol.

Over at Savu, Lewis is finding his place. He can see that Devin, Brady, Jelly, Pantsless Patt, and Mike are in an alliance, which will henceforth be referred to as “The Five” in this recap. That leaves Thien An, Jenna, Kilby, and his farmer friend Maggie on the other side of things.

Kilby and Pantsless Patt chat and Kilby spills that playing with Brady is like “playing a video game with your five-year-old cousin and their controller is unplugged,” which doesn’t sit well with Brady or the rest of The Five once Pantsless Patt shares the details of her conversation. Devin, who has been searching for a new target, sees that Kilby is “sewing seeds of mistrust,” so he and The Five set their sights on him.

Then, both tribes get mail: They must choose one castaway to visit the opposing tribe! For Savu, it’s luck of the draw and Carter wins. For Toka, self-appointed leader Devin is the chosen one.

Devin visits Savu

As ships pass in the waters, Devin and Carter receive a note. Both learn there’s an advantage hidden in the opposing camp. That’s not all: They also have the opportunity to mutiny! If things feel safer within the opposing tribe, they can simply not get back on the boat.

For Devin, Savu is not very tempting. As he describes it, the camp is “rainy, soggy and sad.” He’s still on his “weaponized honesty” tip, and works a smear campaign about Kilby. Sharonda asks Devin for a one-on-one, where they confirm their helicopter alliance is still intact, and immediately flit off to find the advantage. And they find it: a secret extra vote! With the advantage in hand, Devin hops back on the boat and heads back to Toka.

Carter visits Toka

Toka seems like a sunny vacation in comparison to Savu, where Carter is afraid and unsure of his position in the game. He’s getting comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, that when he goes off for chats he leaves his bag behind.

Lewis zeroes in on the bag immediately. Would he just leave it there if there was something valuable in it? Only one way to find out. Some of the castaways go through the bag and find the note about the hidden advantage right on top. So, naturally, they go after it. Maggie finds the correct oar, but she’s having trouble busting it open. Strong Man Brady appears, but has to make a deal with Maggie to use the advantage together. While Brady opens the oar, Maggie holds the advantage in the end – held with a promise that they’ll vote together when they use it.

Brady and Carter connect almost immediately. Brady starts drilling Carter about whether he has an advantage or not. Carter only tells him half of the story: that he has the option to mutiny. Because of the Adventures of Lewis and Carter’s Bag, Brady knows he’s lying about the advantage, but that only makes him want to work with Carter more. They decide they’re ride-or-die.

The boat returns for Carter, but he hasn’t left himself any time to find the advantage (that has already been found by others in Toka). He runs to their boat and sees there are no oars (because they’ve already been busted open by others in Toka). Occupied with his search, he misses his ride back to Savu. And just like that: Carter is part of the Toka Tribe now!

Immunity Challenge

Carter has to look his former tribemates in the eyes as he picks up his new Toka buff. There are now 11 members of Toka, and only 7 on Savu. When Jeff asks Kristin how it feels, she says they’ve performed a DIY “Blood Moon,” so there’s no need for any triple evictions this season.

Toka hands Posey back to Jeff and it’s off to the races. Only seven players are needed for the challenge. So, luckily for Savu, they’re not as disadvantaged as they may have thought, as four people from Toka (Mike, Jelly, Kilby and Maggie) must sit out.

At one point in the key-filled challenge, Savu loses entirely too much time getting up and over a ramp. But even with the leeway, Toka can’t seem to make progress on their puzzle. They completely blow their lead, allowing the small-but-mighty Savu Tribe to pull ahead and win it all. It turns out the old saying “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” might pertain to tribes as well.

Back at camp

All is calm on Toka. Imagine “Morning Mood” by Grieg playing in the background. Jenna apologizes profusely for blowing it on the challenge puzzle and it seems all is forgiven and everything is grand – until about an hour before Tribal Council.

Kilby levels with Devin, and tells him that he feels Devin forced him to sit out of the challenge. Devin comes up with a good reason to back up his directive, and then pushes Kilby to tell him who has been telling lies about him. Kilby names Mike, Pantsless Patt and Jelly, which absolutely shows his cards. Devin’s plan is to take out Kilby, and he leads the rest of The Five to agree.

Lewis and Carter strategize and realize they are the wild cards: the only two yet to vote with this tribe. For now, they play both sides but their votes will likely become the swing votes. They must decide whether to make waves or vote along with The Five. Either way, they’ll have to explain themselves. But that’s a tomorrow problem!

Kilby and Maggie feel that Mike is the low-hanging fruit, but Thien An thinks Pantsless Patt is more of a threat. She works to persuade Jenna, Lewis, Carter and Kilby, and then Brady to vote out Patt.

Going into Tribal Council, both sides feel they have the votes to make it happen: The Five with a kill shot to Kilby, the others with a wave buh-bye to Pantsless Patt.

Tribal Council

Jeff asks the castaways about their heartbreaking loss in the challenge. They explain that with a tribe so large, it’s actually tough to decipher who is loyal to whom. While there are relatively clear factions forming, a lot of lines are blurred. With tonight’s results, everyone is searching for clarity.

Things are tense – of course – as Jeff pulls the votes. It’s like a game of ping-pong back and forth between Kilby and Pantsless Patt unti l… Patt receives six votes over Kilby’s five, and becomes the third castaway voted out of Survivor Season 51.

In a somewhat shocking decision, Lewis and Carter decided to flip on The Five, and vote Patt out. Speaking of Lewis: this was his first time entering Tribal Council! If you’d like a closer look at the Survivor 51 Tribal Council set, check out Jeff’s tour right here:

Who went home on Survivor Season 51 Episode 3?

Patt Cannaday became the third castaway eliminated from Survivor 51 and the fourth to leave the island.

Pantsless Patt was almost certain her alliance would perform a kill shot and send Kilby home, and she voted accordingly. What she didn’t know was that Lewis and new Toka tribemate Carter were riding the fence, deciding which side of the tribe to be loyal to.

As Jeff tallied the votes, points went back and forth between Kilby and Patt, but in the end Lewis and Carter sided with Kilby and the gang. The final vote was five for Kilby and six for Patt, sending our pants-challenged fave home.
