The Dutton family timeline at a glance

The Dutton family is introduced to fans in the late 1800s with the series 1883. James Dutton and his family travel to Montana where the ranch is founded. The saga goes forward in time to the early 1900s in 1923 to show how the ranch survives and grows with James Dutton’s brother and wife, Jacob and Cara.
In the late 20th century, family tragedy strikes again with the death of Evelyn Dutton, eventually leading to the modern-day timeline. In Yellowstone, John Dutton III and his children fight against political enemies and other foes to keep possession of the largest contiguous ranch in the United States.
Marshals, which hit our television screens in March, is in the present day. The CBS new original series follows Kayce Dutton, John Dutton’s youngest son. Paramount+ new original series Dutton Ranch, which premiered May 15, 2026, follows Beth Dutton, the only daughter of John Dutton.

The founding era (19th century)

The Dutton’s family legacy starts off in the 19th century, with the series 1883 (created by Taylor Sheridan). James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and his wife Margaret (Faith Hill) embark on an epic journey out West with their teen daughter Elsa (Isabel May) and young son John (Audie Rick). With the help of Civil War veteran Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) and his right-hand man Thomas (LaMonica Garrett), the family travel to Montana and establish the iconic Yellowstone Ranch.
The trip is filled with action-packed drama and heartbreaking loss that ends with the devastating death of Elsa Dutton. James decides to establish his home at the place he buries his daughter, thus beginning the Yellowstone Ranch.
An important prophecy is revealed in the series finale (“This Is Not Your Heaven”) by chief Spotted Eagle. He tells James Dutton: “I know a place for you, but you know this, that in seven generations, my people will rise up and take it back from you.”
1883 establishes the origin, the epic story, and the trajectory of the Dutton family. Jacob travels to the ranch in Montana in 1894 (revealed in the 1923 series premiere “1923”) to take control after the passing of James and Margaret.
The expansion + survival era (early 20th century)

The origin story series 1923 (also created by Taylor Sheridan) takes the reins in the early 20th century, when the Dutton family expands their ranch and – you guessed it – fights to survive. Led by Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the family turns the ranch into a functioning cattle empire and expands the Dutton’s political power with Jacob serving as the Montana Livestock Commissioner.
In the year 1923, the family battles a brutal winter, and a land-hungry tycoon named Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton). After a sheep farmer brutally injures Jacob in a shootout in Season 1 Episode 3, “The War Has Come Home,” Cara writes to her nephew, James Dutton’s youngest son, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar), begging him to come home.
Spencer Dutton is a WWI veteran who has chosen a life as a big game hunter in Africa. When summoned home to help save the ranch, he returns, followed by his wife Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer). John Dutton II is born in the Season 2 finale (“A Dream and a Memory”).
1923 introduces a new generation of the Dutton family and shows how the family expands their empire and maintains their control via political power.
The modern era (2017–present)
Yellowstone (created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson), shows the Duttons in the modern era. Over the span of nearly a decade (2017-today), the Duttons face off with members of the Broken Rock Reservation and deal with escalating land wars and political battles all in an effort to uphold the Dutton legacy. In the end, it wasn’t outside forces that led to the loss of the ranch, but rather internal conflict and generational consequences.
