Matchup history Army and Navy

Heading into Saturday, Army and Navy have faced each other 125 times. The rivalry dates back to the 19th century. Navy won the first matchup, played in 1890. They also won the most recent matchup, played last year. The Army-Navy game has been played annually, with no interruptions, since 1930. Overall, Navy holds the edge in the series, with a record of 63-55-7.

What is the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy?

The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, established in 1972, is presented annually to the service academy that logs two wins on the football field in the Army-Navy, Air Force-Navy, and Air Force-Army games. (And so you know, if no school gets two wins – i.e., if there's a different winner in each of the three games – then the previous year's winner retains the trophy.)

Saturday's Army-Navy game is the third and final leg in the 2025 edition of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series. Navy won the first test, downing Air Force on Oct. 4, 34-31. Army took the second leg, defeating Air Force on Nov. 1, 20-17.

Navy is the reigning winner of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. It's looking for its first back-to-back trophies since 2012-2013. Army, meanwhile, is looking to score its first Commander-in-Chief's Trophy since 2023.
