What the 60th anniversary celebrates

On Sept. 8, 1966, the very first Star Trek episode, “The Man Trap,” aired on NBC, introducing audiences to Capt. Kirk (William Shanter), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The Gene Roddenberry sci-fi drama would go on to develop a devoted fan base, and earn Emmy® nominations, including one for Nimoy, but ultimately struggle to dominate the then-all-important Nielsen TV ratings. Kirk and company’s stated five-year mission was cut short after three seasons. The final episode aired on June 3, 1969. But, as even the most casual observer of pop culture can tell you, the Star Trek franchise was only getting started.
The 60th anniversary of Star Trek celebrates a universe of shows and movies that make “boldly go” a storytelling mission. In every iteration, Star Trek respects the intelligence of its audience. The franchise’s lofty storytelling goals have carried themes of unity and collaboration across decades, leaving its mark on fans of all ages and the genre of science fiction itself.

A quick look at the Star Trek universe

With 60 years of adventures, the Star Trek universe has managed to undergo a few transformations without losing the core of what its fans love about the franchise.
The original era, from the 1960s to the early 1990s, introduced us to galaxies near and far in Star Trek (1966), Star Trek: The Animated Series, and the first six big-screen movies. We follow William Shatner’s Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock through trials, tribble-ations, and the deepening of an unlikely friendship.
From the late 1980s into the early 2000s, we tag along with a new U.S.S. Enterprise crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise. This era shows off new ships and crew dynamics in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. The storylines are marked most heavily by former enemies of the Federation coming into the fold as allies, from Klingons, like Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn), to the former Borg drone Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). The adventures travel to the big screen via Star Trek: The Next Generation films: Star Trek Generations (1994), which sees Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) team up with Capt. Kirk (William Shatner); Star Trek: First Contact (1996), featuring one of the most epic Borg battles; Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), where Capt. Picard (Stewart) and his crew rebel against the Federation to save a unique planet; and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), where Capt. Picard (Stewart) meets a Romulan version of himself.
Star Trek’s modern streaming era on Paramount+ takes us both into the future and the past. Star Trek: Discovery straddles both ends of the timeline (a theme that carries over to the show’s companion film, Star Trek: Section 31), juxtaposing a golden age of exploration with a time of scarcity. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fills the space between Enterprise and the original series. In the Paramount+ original drama, we explore a fairly young Federation. We touch down vineyard-side with old friends in Star Trek: Picard, and find new, youthful ambition in Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. And that’s just the shows. On the big screen, we explore the Kelvin Timeline via Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). The trio of movies stars Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Zoe Saldaña as Uhura.
Where to start if you’re new
If you do want to start digging into the Star Trek universe, it’s easy to watch the TV shows in order of release, or by in-world chronology. And right now you can also watch all the Star Trek movies, from Star Trek: The Motion Picture to Star Trek: Section 31, on Paramount+.
Overwhelmed? When in doubt, start with the original TV series, Star Trek (1966), for a taste of the classic experience. For slightly earlier stardates, but modern pacing and graphics, you can watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And of course, you can always split the difference with episodes that skew lighter with the occasional celebrity cameo in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
