Tom Selleck may be spending his time as New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on CBS' drama Blue Bloods, but it seems his mustache has other plans.

During his first appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Selleck confessed that his iconic whiskers have always had a mind—and perhaps political aspirations—of their own.

"You don't have to drain the swamp; we can just sweep the swamp out with that thing," Stephen said with a laugh.

For the past seven years, Selleck and his burly bristles have entertained audiences on Blue Bloods; and they're not ready to turn in their badges just yet—well, at least until they pass 163 episodes.

"We're coming up on 150 [episodes] in about four shows, I think," Selleck said. "That's a lot of episodes ... If I get to 164, that's my new [TV show run] record."

To see Selleck in action, watch Blue Bloods on Fridays at 10/9c on CBS and CBS All Access.

Watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS and CBS All Access.
