What to expect from the finale

As with any Survivor episode, you should expect the unexpected from the Survivor season finale – and while we know that’s a Big Brother line, it applies here, too.

Generally speaking, here’s what Survivor history tells us to look for from the finale: a make-or-break Final Tribal Council, filmed as the game went down in Fiji, where the remaining players make their case to the jury as to why they should earn their votes for Sole Survivor; a live reading of the voting results before a studio audience and the reunited (and spruced-up) cast; a live, post-results discussion, moderated by Emmy®-winning host Jeff Probst, where the players react to the season we all just watched, and own up to their gameplay (or not!).

Ah, and one more thing to expect: the Survivor 50 winner will be a Survivor vet. We know this because this season features all-returning players, the first such cast since Season 40 (Survivor: Winners at War).

Why this finale is different

The Survivor 50 finale is different because it’s not – which is to say, it’s a return to longstanding Survivor tradition.

From Survivor Season 2 (Survivor: Africa) through Season 39 (Survivor:Island of the Idols), a Final Tribal Council result was revealed before a reunited cast and a studio audience. The finale for Season 40, held in May 2020, during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, was conducted virtually, with no audience (outside of those watching at home, natch).

Then, from Season 41-Season 49, the Sole Survivor was crowned in the show’s Tribal Council area, on location in Fiji, immediately after jurors cast their votes.

So, the finale for Survivor 50 (Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans) will be the first in seven years to reveal the voting results before a studio audience.

Where the season stands heading into the finale

CBS

As of publication, 10 episodes of Survivor 50 have aired, and nine players remain.

Survivor‘s anniversary season started off with 24 players, all returnees. The cast included some of the game’s most experienced players – castaways with multiple island appearances, including Aubry Bracco, Colby Donaldson, Cirie Fields, Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Ozzy Lusth, and Benjamin “Coach” Wade.

The Fiji-set season has unfolded with gameplay elements determined by fan voting, and guest-star contributions. Country music star Zac Brown and social media icon MrBeast made in-person appearances, while Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, and Oscar® and GRAMMY® winner Billie Eilish lent their names to game twists (but have not popped up on location). Survivor 50 has seen Jeff Probst participate in his first-ever challenge, heard its iconic host rap – and had the prize pot for the winner upped to $2 million (from its traditional $1 million bounty).
