What is Love Island?

Love Island is a reality-dating franchise that began in the U.K., and expanded with several iterations throughout the world – including a United States version. Single contestants, called Islanders, live together in a villa that’s isolated from the outside world, and must remain coupled up in order to stay in the competition.

Throughout a season, Islanders take part in challenges, welcome new arrivals to the villa, and decide whether to stay with their current partners or recouple with someone new. Non-coupled contestants are at risk of elimination, either through viewer vote or dismissal by their fellow Islanders. During the final week of the season, the public votes for its favorite couple to win the competition and receive a large cash prize.

Do you need to watch past seasons to watch new ones?

Though it can be nice to know what to expect from your pending viewing experience, you do not need to watch the seasons of Love Island (CBS) before diving into the latest season of Love Island USA. The show stays compelling from season to season, but the format does undergo a considerable shift as the years go by. In addition, each season features its own unique cast, so viewers needn’t be familiar with past seasons’ narratives and couple-dynamics in order to understand the current goings-on.

What happens in Love Island (CBS) Season 1?

Love Island (CBS) Season 1 premiered on July 9, 2019, and takes place in Fiji. The season, hosted by Arielle Vandenberg, introduces American audiences to the format that had already become popular in the U.K.

Zac Mirabelli and Elizabeth Weber, who couple up during the first week of the show, and spend much of the competition as a pair, ultimately win the grand prize. The runner-up couple is Alexandra Stewart and Dylan Curry. Other contestants in Season 1 include Caro Viee, Ray Gantt, Emily Salch, and Weston Richey.

What happens in Love Island (CBS) Season 2?

Love Island (CBS) Season 2 premiered on August 24, 2020. Due to travel restrictions that came about during the COVID-19 pandemic, production relocated from Fiji to a villa on the Las Vegas Strip. Arielle Vandenberg returns as series host.

Caleb Corprew and Justine Ndiba win the season after becoming one of the most talked-about duos in the villa. The cast also includes runner-up couple Cely Vazquez and Johnny Middlebrooks, as well as Calvin Cobb, Moira Tumas, Carrington Rodriguez, and Laurel Goldman.

What happens in Love Island (CBS) Season 3?

Arielle Vandenberg hosts Love Island (CBS) Season 3, which premiered on July 7, 2021. After one summer in Las Vegas, the show returns to a tropical villa setting – this time in Nīnole, Hawaii.

This season introduces Casa Amor, a game twist that introduces new Islanders into the contestant mix. This element obligates original players to choose between keeping their existing partnerships or swapping their other halves out for … well, new halves. The catch? Without comparing notes with one another, both members of each original couple must choose: Stick with their partner, or recouple. The two must make the same choice, or one will leave the island.

At the conclusion of a season full of memorable new arrivals and multiple recouplings, Korey Gandy and Olivia Kaiser win the grand prize. Kyra Lizama and Will Moncada take the runners-up position. Other notable Islanders include Cashay Proudfoot, Shannon St. Clair, Josh Goldstein, Trina Njoroge, and Cinco Holland Jr.

The Love Island franchise combines dating, competition, and audience participation in a single riveting (not to mention sexy) format.

Viewers follow relationships as they develop over several weeks. New, charismatic Islanders arrive throughout the season, public votes influence outcomes, and recouplings can change the direction of the competition.

The series also releases episodes frequently during its run, allowing audiences to follow events as they happen … and not making them wait too long between cliffhangers.

What to watch if you love Love Island?

If you enjoy the Love Island franchise, you may want to explore other reality series that focus on relationships, competition, and social dynamics.

Shows such as Big Brother, Survivor, and The Challenge feature contestants living together while navigating alliances, strategy, and eliminations. Each of these series approaches competition differently, but all of them place participants in situations where the strength of their relationships affect the outcome of the game.
