What is South Park about?

South Park
Comedy Central

South Park follows the misadventures of four foul-mouthed, troublemaking boys — Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny — in a fictional small town in the Colorado Rockies. Between school, family life, and neighborhood trouble, the four friends have a knack for getting caught up in unpredictable (and usually absurd) situations that spiral well beyond typical childhood problems.

The animated comedy often mixes crude humor and surreal storylines with social commentary and topical satire, taking aim at everything from celebrity culture to politics. While Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny are at the show’s core, a sprawling cast of memorable supporting characters, including their classmate Butters, Stan’s father Randy, and their teacher Mr. Garrison, has allowed South Park to branch out from the boys’ adventures and explore the lives of the town’s other residents.

South Park cast and characters

Meet the four foul-mouthed friends at the heart of South Park — and a few other characters who help turn small-town life into chaos.

Stan Marsh

Comedy Central

Stan Marsh is one of South Park’s four main boys and often serves as the group’s comparatively grounded voice of reason, reacting skeptically to the chaos around him. Stan is voiced by Trey Parker.

Kyle Broflovski

Kyle in South Park
Comedy Central

Kyle Broflovski is Stan’s best friend and frequently clashes with Cartman, whose offensive antics often test his patience. Principled and outspoken, Kyle questions the absurdity around him and pushes back when something feels wrong. Kyle is voiced by Matt Stone.

Eric Cartman

Eric Cartman in South Park
Comedy Central

Eric Cartman is selfish, scheming, and rarely willing to take no for an answer, making him the instigator behind many of the group’s misadventures. His outsized ego and explosive tantrums make him one of South Park’s most recognizable characters. Cartman is voiced by Trey Parker.

Kenny McCormick

Kenny in South Park
Comedy Central

Kenny McCormick rounds out the main foursome, recognizable by his orange parka and muffled speech. His frequent deaths (and reappearances) are a running joke in the early seasons. Kenny is voiced by Matt Stone.

Other fan-favorite characters

Beyond the core four, South Park fan-favorite characters include Butters, Stan’s father Randy, teacher Mr. Garrison, beloved school cook Chef, and fellow classmate Timmy.

Who created South Park?

South Park was created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The series was born out of the duo’s two animated short films from the 1990s, both titled The Spirit of Christmas, and premiered on Comedy Central in 1997. Parker and Stone remain central to the show’s writing, character voices, irreverent and satirical humor, and creative identity. Its signature construction-paper look gives South Park its instantly recognizable animation style.

What’s new in Season 29?

South Park Season 29 brings fresh chaos to town, with episodes exploring e-bike culture, billionaire influence, and the growing number of data centers in local communities. The show continues to pair everyday problems with pointed commentary on technology, politics, and cultural trends.
