The big picture: Trailer summary
In the opening moments of the official Season 8 trailer for The Chi, we hear the voice of Bakari (Ahmad Nicholas Ferguson), a young man who has spent the series oscillating between his taste for fast money and his desire for a stable life: “Life comes at you fast, whether you’re ready for it or not.” As Bakari continues to speak, we watch a succession of milestones – a wedding, a birth, an idyllic childhood bike ride. But fans of The Chi know that these moments of contentment can’t last, especially in the South Side of Chicago. Pretty soon, the characters – in the words of “Papa” Jackson II (Shamon Brown Jr.) – “reach for more,” sometimes in very dangerous directions.
As Bakari muses, “Everything has to come to an end,” we see a montage of character deaths, plus a few of the surprising homecomings that have taken place throughout the series (hello again, Reg!). We witness Papa, Jake Taylor (Michael V. Epps), Kiesha Williams (Birgundi Baker), and Emmett Washington (Jacob Latimore) morphing from teens to adults before our eyes. Things in this world are changing. An era is ending – with a major bang.
Breaking down key moments
Immediately after Bakari reflects on life, the trailer gives us the image of Victor “Trig” Taylor (Luke James) staring at us from behind bars. It’s not a surprising image, as the conclusion of Season 7 finds him and Rashaad (Jason Weaver) literally red-handed at a crime scene, but it does signal that the first-look nostalgia is over. Season 8 is about consequences and hard decisions. We’re now thrust into the coldest winter that Chicago has ever known, and a chill has settled into the series, too. Tiff (Hannaha Hall) cries, “What are you keeping from me?”.
Our narrator, Bakari, appears several times in the back half of the trailer, and we observe him getting seduced into old gang-life habits, while simultaneously trying to go legit. And in a quick shot, Bakari sits at his own book-signing – the act of writing a book illustrating how these characters are leaving a legacy in the show, and no doubt a lasting impression for the fans.
