In the Dexter®: Resurrection episode “Fallen,” Dexter struggles to find a way to manage his midlife crisis. A podcast on the subject encourages him to embrace his inner strength without harming anyone. Well, that’s a hard pass. Even seeing his latest kill on the news fails to lift his spirits, especially when a fellow gymgoer remarks that even his grandmother could take down someone like the Rapunzel Killer (Eric Stonestreet). Fine, then. Maybe Dexter will set his sights on the subject of the next news story: the Five Borough Killer (Dan Stevens), who recently murdered a woman and then AirDropped footage of the killing to an unsuspecting cellphone user. Though if the guy has only a single slaying under his belt, he may not be worth Dexter’s time …

Meanwhile, Harrison starts his first day with the NYPD with the discovery that he’s been assigned to the homicide division. His training officer turns out to be Fiona Mixon (Nona Parker Johnson), with whom he’s had a one-night stand. Fiona’s shocked to see him, and not just because she’s about to show the ropes to someone she’s recently slept with. She’s the daughter of a police captain (Bokeem Woodbine), and even she had to put in two years before landing in homicide. How has a brand-spankin’-new academy grad jumped the line?

Dexter wonders the same thing. Could Harrison’s early assignment to the homicide department mean that Detectives Claudette Wallace (Kadia Saraf) and Melvin Oliva (Dominic Fumusa) want to keep a close eye on him? After all, they questioned Harrison about a murder in Season 1 — one the young man actually committed but escaped punishment for thanks to Dexter’s track-covering efforts. Nah, Harrison insists. It was his stellar test scores that earned him the post. Dexter lets the subject drop, but it doesn’t mean he’s letting his guard down.

Dexter’s attention soon turns to the reappearance of Charley Brown (Uma Thurman) in his life. The former head of security for the late Leon Prater (Season 1’s Peter Dinklage) used her earnings from that unsavory job to pay for her mother’s medical care, but now she’s seeking a kind of redemption for her past crimes. Armed with intelligence gathered as Prater’s second-in-command, she offers to help Dexter track down two elusive members of his serial killer club: the Jawsplitter and the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger.

Dexter certainly wants to take these killers down, but he balks at the idea of teaming up; he works alone. Harry (James Remar), the embodiment of Dexter’s conscience, sees things differently. Could collaborating on a few kills be just what Dexter needs to shake himself out of his midlife crisis? Dexter considers the possibility. Perhaps he could use a bit of company.

Unfortunately, the company that chooses this moment to enter Dexter’s life isn’t exactly welcome. It’s Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Dexter’s former Miami Metro colleague, who’s now working as a private investigator looking into Leon Prater’s disappearance. Quinn hopes to bring justice to the families of those murdered by Prater’s serial-killer cronies, as well as to Angel Batista, whose death remains unresolved. Dexter listens uneasily as Quinn describes Prater’s macabre collection of trophies, including a souvenir connected to the Bay Harbor Butcher. If Quinn connects the dots, as Batista did before him, and realizes that Dexter is the Butcher, it could be curtains for … well, one of them. Dexter is betting on Joey, but as his nightmares about Batista suggest, he isn’t exactly eager to kill another former colleague.

No, Dexter has his eye on another prize: the New York Ripper. The NYPD has spent years trying to pin a series of murders on Don Framt (Brian Cox), but lacks the evidence to make an arrest. When Dexter speaks to the old man directly, however, Framt boasts about his crimes and the attention they’ve brought him. It would be so easy for Dexter to simply kill the creep and be done with it.

Harrison puts the kibosh on the idea: This is a case for the police. Detective Wallace wants to find the evidence that will put the Ripper behind bars, and Dexter can’t ruin her chance by simply drugging and stabbing the suspect. Dexter promises to hold off, at least for now. Instead, he’ll team up with Charley and turn his attention to the targets she’s lined up for him.

First up is Ray Ballard, aka the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger (Gabriel Luna), whom Charley lures out of hiding with an invitation to a gathering of Prater’s like-minded killers. The scheme is simple: Charley will welcome Ballard to an out-of-the-way location and tell him that Prater is en route. Dexter, posing as Red Schmidt – the alias he used to infiltrate Prater’s club – will put Ballard at ease before leading him to a soundproof basement from which the fiend won’t emerge alive. But as Dexter and Charley finalize the proposal, a sudden crash interrupts them.

Earlier, the Five Borough Killer warned that he’d strike again on Broadway, promising “a very special show.” The NYPD responds by swarming the Theater District, but the killer has something else in mind. The crash that interrupts Dexter and Charley is the sound of a body hitting the Broadway Newsstand after falling from the roof above. Dexter briefly locks eyes with the predator, who has now slaughtered two innocents, and decides he’s finally worth taking seriously. Yep, if Dexter has his way, the so-called Five Borough Killer won’t ever live up to his name.

Key moments and takeaways

In one of the episode’s biggest moments, Dexter confides in Charley that only two living people know his secret: Harrison – and now, Charley. A flicker of terror crosses her face before she declares herself honored by the disclosure. Despite her military training and years spent among serial killers, Charley knows she’s playing a dangerous game by joining forces with Dexter. Sure, she’s helping rid the world of monsters by aligning herself with a killer who follows a code. But she’s also putting her trust in a man who has proven himself willing to murder to protect his secrets.

Meanwhile, Harrison struggles to convince himself that his lightning-quick assignment to homicide is entirely merit-based. Sure, he’s smart enough to ply his new coworkers with donuts, and his Spanish-language skills have already come in handy. But Detective Wallace appears to regard him primarily as a murder suspect, not a promising new recruit. Harrison’s insistence that Dexter stay away from the New York Ripper investigation is telling. The case is Wallace’s white whale, and the more Harrison can do to help her catch the killer – while keeping his dad from interfering – the better.

Character highlights

Dexter’s decision to form an alliance with Charley marks quite a change for a man who has spent most of his life working alone. Is he genuinely ready to let someone in, or is this another symptom of the recklessness fueling his midlife crisis? Charley, too, is taking a leap of faith in pursuit of redemption. Will teaming up with Dexter, a killer with a code, ease her guilt over rubbing elbows with the truly noxious for so long? Or is she simply returning to the darkness she hoped to leave behind?

Harrison is also entering uncharted territory. His excitement over joining the homicide division is giving way to the fear that his new bosses see him less as a promising recruit than as a murder suspect that ought to be kept close. As Harrison works to prove himself and Joey Quinn pursues justice, both men threaten to uncover truths Dexter would rather keep buried. How can Dexter protect his secrets without hurting either of them – or putting himself in peril?
