Here’s the Lioness Season 3 ending explained, including who abducted Joe, Aaliyah’s return, and what happens to Joe’s family. This is a recap, so it should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: Major spoiler alert!
Who paid contractors to abduct Joe? The Season 3 finale titled “The Unraveling” reveals Aaliyah Amrohi (Stephanie Nur) from Season 1 is back and the mastermind behind the attack on Joe. The episode also sees beloved characters injured in a gunfight, double agent Oleksandra face a reckoning, and Joe’s family make a surprising decision.
Perhaps the episode’s two biggest shockers are Aaliyah’s return after the team destroyed her family in the Season 1 finale and Neal’s decision to leave with his daughters. Elsewhere in the finale, two members of the QRF (quick reaction force) are sent to the hospital with grave injuries, Byron and Kaitlyn deal with a public disaster, and more. “The Unraveling” – Season 3 finale recap
CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) and CIA Special Activities Officer Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman )’s plan to retaliate against Ukraine for Joe’s abduction rolls out at the start of the finale. Grady (Ian Bohen) and Cody (Matt Gerald) pick up the Ukrainian double agent, Oleksandra (Elizaveta Neretin), in Oklahoma City. Kaitlyn wakes up Joe at the office and tells her that the U.S. is handing the prisoner Aleksi Yurimov (Jack Dimich) back to Russia, and she can question him with her team as they move him from Guantanamo Bay to the Russian embassy in D.C. Secretary of State Edward Mullins sets up a breakfast where Byron reveals to the Russian ambassador they have Yurimov and want to hand him back.
Once the plan is set, the NSA flags a Russian national and person of interest, and Byron has Kyle (Thad Luckinbill), Tex (Jonah Wharton), and Randy (Austin Hébert) follow him. The target, Dimitri Sokolov (Gene Farber), meets with Renat (Dimitry Rosetta), the Russian who captured Joe. Bobby pulls up a video feed of Kyle at the restaurant, and Joe identifies Renat, sending Tex and Randy in to engage. What follows is a brutal gunfight where Renat shoots Dimitri and turns on Tex and Randy. They return fire and take him out along with the protective detail on Dimitri. Tex takes two bullets to the stomach while Randy takes one in the shoulder.
In route from Guantanamo Bay to the embassy Yurimov gives Joe some surprising information. He thinks she was abducted not by someone from Russia or Ukraine, but by someone who hates her. Back in D.C., the Belarusian inmate Alex (Sandi Todorovic) shares that the contract job to abduct Joe was shopped around to contractors by Sokolov and Renat, but he turned it down because it felt like a suicide mission. He reveals that the abductors were to hand Joe off to the KSS (Kata’ib Sayyid ul-Shuhada), the Master of Martyrs Battalion, a paramilitary group in the Middle East.
After the interrogation, Kaitlyn tells Joe to go home. When she does, she finds her house up for sale, her family and their belongings gone, and a note implying they’ve left. The last scene unmasks the real mastermind behind Joe’s abduction: Aaliyah Amrohi, the target from Season 1. The Lioness team destroyed her family the night before her wedding in an attack that has left Aaliyah with burn marks. Aaliyah is out for vengeance and has plans to continue in her quest to take out Joe and the team.
What happens to Joe?
Oscar® winner and executive producer Zoe Saldaña’s character Joe McNamara, station chief of the CIA Lioness program, really goes through it this season. In the finale, she reunites with her team and eventually returns home. Joe is rescued in the penultimate episode (“Kiss the Girls”) after enduring a harrowing abduction and unnerving torture that results in her losing a toe. The senior case officer returns to D.C. with a laser focus on finding the person or persons behind her abduction.
Timelines align in the season finale as the past and present storylines converge after Joe’s rescue. After returning, Joe decides to avoid her family and get right back to work. As for her future with the Lioness program, Neal makes it known to Kaitlyn that he wants Joe out, which leads Kaitlyn to tell Joe that, after their mission, they are going to have a long talk about her future.
With her team’s help, Joe narrows the search for her abductors. A surveillance op run by Kyle helps track down the Russian assets who orchestrated Joe’s abduction. A gunfight takes those two players out, along with their detail, but leaves Randy and Tex with gunshot wounds. Meanwhile, the rest of the team travels to Guantanamo Bay to free Yurimov and question him about the operation. Alexis tells Joe who he thinks might be behind the attack and warns her: “Never underestimate how many hate you.”
The finale ends with Joe returning to an empty home, as the audience learns that Aaliyah Amrohi has been behind the mission to take the CIA operative all along.
What does the finale mean for Joe’s family?
Well, it’s not looking great. Joe intentionally avoids returning home after her abduction, a choice that leads to a heartbreaking decision. When Joe finally does go home, she finds a for-sale sign outside the house, a note in the kitchen, and her family missing. The sad sight makes it clear that Neal and the girls have left after Joe chose her commitment to the job over returning home to them.
Who survives the finale?
Thankfully, all the major characters survive the season finale. It seems touch-and-go for Randy and Tex after they’re both shot, but Randy is seen recovering at the hospital, and a hospital worker confirms that Tex made it out of surgery.
Things didn’t end well for Oleksandra, the Ukrainian double agent. When her dead body is found by a jogger and his dog, we learn she was taken out by the CIA. The Russians behind Joe’s capture, Sokolov and Renat, meet their demise during the shootout with Kyle, Randy, and Tex.
What the ending really means
The cliffhanger ending means that Team Lioness is not out of the woods. Aaliyah says, “We have to get her (Joe) out. If we get her out, the others will come to save her, and then we have them all.” Her mission is to destroy them, and even though she failed twice, she says that “maybe third time’s the charm.”
The finale also shows how Joe’s professional and personal lives colliding could spell the end to her career in the field or create a huge rift in her family. The McNamaras have left their home after Joe chose the mission over seeing her family.
