Transformers

Teenager Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) buys his first car, a beat-up yellow Camaro that turns out to be Bumblebee, an alien robot in disguise. Soon, Sam and Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) are caught in the middle of a war between the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the evil Decepticons.
This is the 2007 film that starts it all: The toy line turned animated TV favorite gets a live-action, blockbuster glow-up courtesy Steven Spielberg, who executive produces, and Michael Bay, who directs. Bay will go on to direct every Transformers movie through Transformers: The Last Knight, and remain on as a producer of the three most recent movies (Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Transformers One).

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

In this sequel from 2009, Sam (Shia LaBeouf) heads off to college, hoping for a normal life. No such luck. Symbols flooding his brain hold the key to an ancient Decepticon known as The Fallen, and to the fate of the sun itself. Optimus Prime and the Autobots race to protect Sam as the battle stretches from suburban lawns to the pyramids of Egypt.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

The space race gets a rewrite! As we’re told in this 2011 entry, the Apollo 11 mission was sent to investigate a Cybertronian ship that crashed on the moon. The secrets aboard set off a chain of events that eventually put Chicago, Illinois, at the center of a Decepticon invasion, and hands Sam (Shia LaBeouf) and the Autobots their darkest hour yet. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley co-stars as Sam’s new love interest.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

A fresh start for the franchise. In this 2014 Transformers movie, Texas inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) discovers that the rusted semi truck he salvaged is Optimus Prime. With humanity hunting the Transformers after the destruction in Chicago, Cade and his daughter, Tessa (Nicola Peltz), go on the run with the Autobots.

Bumblebee
Travis Knight (ParaNorman) slides into the director’s chair for the franchise’s first prequel. On the run and hiding out as a Volkswagen Beetle in a California beach town in 1987, Bumblebee is discovered by a teenager (Hailee Steinfeld). The movie balances its robot action with a heartfelt coming-of-age story – and a soundtrack straight out of the ’80s.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Another time jump! This 2023 film takes us to 1994 Brooklyn, New York. Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) and artifact researcher Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback) are pulled into a fight to save the world. To stop it, Optimus Prime and the Autobots join forces with the Maximals, a faction of beast-mode Transformers led by Optimus Primal.

Transformers One
The franchise’s first animated feature, released in 2024, takes viewers back to Cybertron, long before the war between Autobots and Decepticons begins. Orion Pax and D-16, voiced by Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry, work together as friends, unaware of their destined futures as Optimus Prime and Megatron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film explores the origins of the franchise’s central rivalry and the betrayal that sets everything in motion.
