Madeline “Matty” Matlock isn’t afraid to go hard. Not only has she rejoined the workforce as a septuagenarian, she’s chosen a high-pressure law-firm as her place of employment. On top of that, she’s keeping pace with younger and more tech-savvy coworkers, while also keeping hidden two major secrets: Her true identity, and the fact that she’s picked this particular company so that she can go digging into its shady history.

We’ve done a little digging ourselves, Matlock fans, and we’ve uncovered lots of amazing Season 2 news. The renewal itself is no big surprise. After all, the CBS original drama series stars powerhouse Oscar®- and Emmy® winner Kathy Bates, and earned the ranking of No. 1 new show by the end of its first season. But the nearness of the premiere date, the gasp-worthy nature of the finale, and the sheer number of Matlock episodes you can stream right now on Paramount+? Now, those details are cheer-worthy enough to earn a stern gavel-rapping from any judge.

But first: SPOILER ALERT. Key plot points from the first season, and especially from that jaw-dropping finale, will be discussed. And, like Matty Matlock investigating the particulars of a case, we plan to leave no stone unturned. So, read with the utmost care.

What is Matlock Season 2 about?

SPOILER ALERT: Matlock Season 2 picks up with both Matty (Kathy Bates) and Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) at a crisis point. Matty has spent her time at the law firm of Jacobson Moore determining which of her coworkers she can trust with her true identity: that of a wealthy woman named Madeline Kingston who seeks justice for the opioid death of her daughter, Ellie. At a crucial moment in “Tricks of the Trade - Part Two”, however, her most-trusted confidant appears to leave her high and dry. Has she placed stock in the wrong person?

This confidant, Olympia, also starts Season 2 at a crucial juncture. The brand-new partner at Jacobson Moore has been experiencing her own journey with connection; she and her ex, Julian (Jason Ritter), have gradually reestablished harmony with one another post-separation. But the Season 1 finale finds him revealing a major secret from his past, and this truth bomb calls into question everything she thought she knew about his character. Will she stay true to her sense of justice, as well as her pact with Matty, or will she choose to protect the father of her children?

Season 2 will definitely call into question the bond between Matty and Olympia, as well as force Olympia to question her value system. Can the women’s friendship – not to mention Matty’s master plan – be saved?

What happens in the Matlock Season 1 finale?

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT WARNING: Since Matty Matlock (Bates) began at Jacobson Moore, she’s gathered evidence in an effort to find out who buried the WellBrexa files, documents that provide evidence about the addictiveness of the drug that took Ellie’s life. She learns through a Redditor’s messages that the WellBrexa study was removed from the company’s system. This whistleblower is later revealed to be Mrs. Belvin (Patricia Belcher), longtime office manager of the firm. Matty knows she’s onto something.

Matty reveals her findings to Olympia (Marshall), and theorizes that Julian (Ritter) removed the documents and used the payout to fund his and Olympia’s “forever home” when the couple was newly married. Olympia, reluctant to believe her ex-husband would do such a thing, counters that Julian paid for that house with his trust. But when Olympia asks Julian point-blank how the brownstone was financed, his response doesn’t entirely satisfy her. Olympia concedes that she’ll take Matty along with her to the bank, utilizing Matty’s scheme to not-so-legally access Julian’s records. Surely then both women will see for themselves, and for certain, that Julian had nothing to do with the file’s disappearance.

Olympia’s financial advisor (Kat Coiro) is available to see Olympia only for a small window of time, however, and it’s the same window in which first-year associate Sarah (Leah Lewis) is trying her first case. Matty decides to stay behind at the courthouse; Sarah requires someone senior at her side during the trial, and Olympia needs to know that Matty trusts her. Matty, in turn, determines that Olympia has a strong enough conscience to do the right thing – no matter what she discovers at the bank. The two women make a plan to meet at Matty’s house with Olympia’s findings.

Olympia, to her immense relief, learns that Julian didn’t take a payout. The brownstone was indeed purchased through his trust. As she’s about to leave the bank to tell Matty the good news, her financial adviser asks if she’d like to check the safety deposit box before she goes.

There, in the box, is the long-missing WellBrexa file.

Olympia is right in the middle of processing what she’s seeing when Julian enters the room. Desperately, he tries to explain his reasons for hiding papers that would’ve taken a deadly drug off the market. He was in his mid-20s during the time the WellBrexa study came to light, and it was a time in which he was feeling especially invisible and worthless to his father, Senior (Beau Bridges). His dad, the managing partner at Jacobson Moore, wanted those documents to disappear, so Julian “disappeared” them. It wasn’t about money. It was about earning his father’s attention and respect.

But Julian has never let go of the guilt – a reason he’s kept the documents instead of shredding them. Though gutted about his choice, he begs Olympia not to expose his crime, and implores her not to define him by the worst thing he’s ever done. Olympia gapes at him, frozen in indecision.

As Matty waits at home for Olympia to show up, the doorbell rings. Finally, answers! She opens the door, and a man stands at the threshold. He claims to be the biological father to Alfie (Aaron Harris). With some hesitation, Matty invites him inside.

What to expect in Matlock Season 2

We expect Matlock Season 2 to pick up right where the gasp-worthy Season 1 finale left off. Our hypotheses? EVEN MORE SPOILERS AHEAD! Matty will dig into whether or not the man who’s shown up at her front door claiming to be Alfie’s dad is who he professes to be. If his paternity checks out, she and her husband, Edwin (Sam Anderson), will be forced to determine if his presence in Alfie’s life is a healthy one.

Junior associate Billy (David Del Rio), too, has a big choice to make: Move forward with his dating life, or (surprise!) do some settling down with his newly-pregnant ex, Claudia (Bella Ortiz). As all of this swirls around her, Matty has plans to move her family from their New York home to San Francisco for a new start. With Olympia’s discovery throwing a wrench in the works, it seems likely that a move out west will indefinitely be put on hold.
