What happens in Dexter®: Resurrection Season 1?

Oh, quite a bit – all of it murderously entertaining. Do read on, but fair warning: this Season 1 synopsis is spattered with spoilers.

In Dexter®: Resurrection Season 1, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) awakens from a coma in upstate New York, having been shot weeks prior by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Upon discovering that Harrison has run off to the Big Apple, Dexter resolves to find him. It’s not long before he discovers that Harrison has taken a job as a concierge at a Manhattan hotel, and that the young man has murdered one of the guests – sexual predator Ryan Foster (Bryan Lillis). Dexter keeps his distance, hoping to hide the fact that he’s alive. He gets sidetracked, however, by a preoccupation with Ronald “Red” Schmidt (Marc Menchaca), a serial killer who targets ride‑share drivers. Through his investigation into (and ultimate slaying of) this particular murderer, Dexter stumbles upon an odd invitation to a dinner party. He decides to attend the soirée as Red.

At the mansion location of the party, Dexter meets Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), a venture capitalist obsessed with serial killers. The dinner has attracted several other murderers: Mia/Lady Vengeance (Krysten Ritter), Al (Eric Stonestreet), Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris), and Gareth, the Gemini Killer (David Dastmalchian), as well as Charley (Uma Thurman), Prater’s right-hand woman. Dexter spares little time killing Lowell and framing Mia for the murder of Ryan Foster. Dexter and Harrison reunite, and they realize that their respective Dark Passengers are not analogous. Their urges don’t manifest in the same way, and their bond might always be a little strained, but they love and need one another.

Dexter studies the workings of Prater’s group (and systematically snuffs some of them out) while helping Harrison stay ahead of the law. Meanwhile, the law is inching toward Dexter himself. Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas), who has known Dexter since Dexter’s days as a blood-spatter expert in Miami, has followed Dexter to New York City. He knows that Dexter has spent time living under an assumed name, and suspects him of being the infamous serial killer known as the Bay Harbor Butcher. He also believes that Harrison is starting down the same murderous path as his father.

Though Dexter wants to keep Harrison away from his dealings with Prater, Prater interrupts Dexter’s meal with Harrison. Once alone together, Dexter reveals to his son that Prater is the head of a serial-killer club, and that he believes Dexter to be this Red character. Harrison barely has time to think of a backstory for himself before Charley confronts him alone; she didn’t know Ronald “Red” Schmidt had a son, and it’s her job to know everything about everyone in Leon Prater’s orbit. Harrison lies as well as he can, and upon Charley’s departure, tells Dexter about what happened. Dexter responds by capturing Charley and demanding to know how she ended up working for Prater in the first place. Charley discloses that she collects and vets serial killers for Prater and, in exchange, the billionaire funds treatments for Charley’s ill mother. Dexter understands that it’s Prater pulling all the strings, and therefore Prater he must kill.

Batista has seen Prater with Dexter, and tips the tycoon off about the true identity of the man Prater believes is Red. Prater is delighted. He arranges for Batista to be strapped to a kill table, and rejoices that he has someone even better than Ronald Schmidt in his midst – he's got the Bay Harbor Butcher! He offers Dexter a deal: He’ll invite serial killers to his home, and Dexter will kill them on the property. They’ll be partners. Of course, Dexter would have to start by murdering Batista. Will Dexter take the deal?

There are some things even we spoilers won’t spoil! Check out the Dexter®: Resurrection Season 1 finale episode “And Justice For All” for answers. Stream too the rest of the season to see all these twists and turns in action – trust us, we definitely didn’t reveal everything.
