And so it begins ...

The Yellowstone universe is a multi-generational Western saga that follows a family -- the Duttons -- from the late 1800s to present day as they fight to acquire land in Montana, and maintain a hold on their ranching empire. The journey begins in 1883, the limited-run Paramount+ original drama, which premiered in 2021.

The acclaimed show introduces us to James Dutton (Tim McGraw). And, yes, in the Yellowstone universe, James Dutton is a forerunner of Yellowstone patriarch John Dutton III.

In the year 1883, James, wife Margaret (Faith Hill), and their children journey westward in a wagon train led by Shea Brennan (Oscar® nominee Sam Elliott). Though the Duttons face treacherous landscapes and dangerous outlaws, their dream to start a ranch in Montana keeps them pushing forward.

Behold, the 20th century …

The Paramount+ original drama 1923 takes place about 40 years after the founding of the Duttons' Montana cattle ranch. In the Prohibition-era Mountain West, Jacob Dutton (Oscar® nominee Harrison Ford), a brother of 1883's James Dutton, and his wife, Cara Dutton (Oscar® winner Helen Mirren), face drought, disease, and the looming Great Depression.

1923 premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Season 2 concluded on April 6, 2025, with the emotional season finale, "A Dream and a Memory." Click here for a watch guide to 1923 Season 2, and get more details (aka, spoilers!) about how the Duttons of 1923 are connected to the the Duttons of 1883.

Like 1883, all episodes of 1923 are streaming now on Paramount+. Between the two shows, there are 25 total episodes to binge-watch right now.
